What others might call coaching, I choose to call LifeSmithing. Perhaps this is because I am an artist, and art metaphors work better for me than sports metaphors. Like mediation and facilitation, LifeSmithing is about empowering individuals to take full ownership of their experience on this planet; with the result a more profound feeling of contentment and happiness. LifeSmithing is also the philosophy that under-girds everything I do.
As a LifeSmith, I am interested in building a dependent-free yet interdependent relationship that empowers you to create your own life vision, articulate your mission, and discover for yourself the way to structure your journey so that you can achieve your goals. Results of LifeSmithing sessions can include: an overall sense of accomplishment and feeling good about yourself, a deeper understanding of who you are, clarity regarding your innate skills, wisdom, and life goals; and how you can align your inner and outer life to accomplish those goals. LifeSmithing is perfect for anyone who:
- Feels stuck (and wants to be un-stuck),
- Wants to create something new,
- Years to manifest a long-held dream,
- Needs to take the plunge, but wants some sort of life vest,
- Chooses to move into a greater awareness of who they are, or
- Is facing a transition and is interested in handling that transition as adeptly as possible.
You can know where you want to be, and not know how to get there. You can be clear about what isn’t working, and not know what to do to change it. Or you can know where you are, and where you want to be, but want someone to help keep you on track. Consider me a workout buddy who offers tools to make the going a bit easier, while ensuring that heavy things like dumbbells don’t fall on your head in the process! You can hire me to support you in building the life you want, and feel satisfied and downright thrilled about yourself in the process.
LifeSmithing can be like coaching—offering an ongoing relationship with a weekly or bi-monthly check-in time to review progress and co-create next steps. But it can also be used as a “pit-stop” on your journey, enabling a moment of grace to speak your ideas out loud. Put simply, I can be a good (and wise) friend who you don’t have to feel guilty about when you chew my ear off and don’t ask how I’m doing in return. The session becomes a deliberate moment of reflection where you can stop, reaffirm or change your destination point, and shift your course. Part of the self-reflection process includes checking in to see if how you are engaging in the journey is ultimately supportive of reaching the destination you’ve set for yourself (a useful thing to ensure, if you think about it!).
As an artist who has taught workshops and art classes, I can also bring creative play into our LifeSmithing sessions. Nothing beats the non-linear, trans-rational mode of making collages or other art projects to get to the heart of the matter.
